PREFACE
This thesis marks the conclusion of the industrial Ph.D. project entitled Theory of
Plasticity for Steel Structures. The thesis is prepared as partial fulfilment of the
requirements for the Industrial Ph.D. degree in accordance with The Industrial PhD
Initiative under the Danish Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation, VTU.
The work has been carried out at the Department of Civil Engineering, BYG•DTU,
the Technical University of Denmark and at Birch & Krogboe A/S, Consultants and
Planners during the period October 2003 to September 2006. It has been conducted
under the supervision of Professor Dr. techn. M. P. Nielsen, BYG•DTU, Associate
Professor Henning Agerskov, BYG•DTU and Head of Structural Department Jesper
Gath, Birch & Krogboe A/S.
All my supervisors are gratefully acknowledged for their valuable support and
guidance during the study. I would especially like to thank M. P. Nielsen for his
valuable advice on theoretical terms, as well as in practice for his inspiration and for
many fruitful discussions and criticism during the daily meetings, the “coffee breaks”.

ABSTRACT
A model of kinematic work hardening based on Frederick and Armstrong
(1966), Phillips and Weng (1975), Chaboche (1979), and Voyiadjis and
Basuroychowdhury (1998) is proposed for metal like behavior materials. In this
proposed model, ratcheting is taken into account through the observation of the
backstress evolution equation, modified by the addition of a new term, ij βσ& .
Experimental observations made by Phillips and Lee (1979) showed that the direction
of the movement of the center of the yield surface occurs in between the stress rate
tensor ij σ& and the plastic strain rate tensor ij ε&′′ directions. The new term, added to
Chaboche model (1979), will account for these experimental observation. The model is
tested for uniaxial monotonic, cyclic loadings, and for ratcheting prediction. The results
obtained are analyzed and compared to existing hardening models and experimental
results.

(ABSTRACT)
There is a need for reliable methods to determine approximate solutions of nonlinear continuous
systems. Recently, it has been proved that nite{degree{of{freedom Galerkin{type
discretization procedures applied to some distributed{parameter systems may fail to predict
the correct dynamics. By contrast, direct procedures yield reliable approximate solutions.
Starting from these results and extending some of these concepts and procedures, we compare
the outcomes of these two approaches (the Galerkin discretization and the direct
application of a reduction method to the original governing equations) with experimental
results. The nonlinear planar vibrations of a buckled beam around its rst buckling mode
shape are investigated. Frequency{response curves characterizing single-mode responses of
the beam under a primary resonance are generated using both approaches and contrasted
with experimentally obtained frequency{response curves. It is shown that discretization
leads to erroneous quantitative as well as qualitative results in certain ranges of the buckling
level, whereas the direct approach predicts the correct dynamics of the system.

Lateral torsional buckling should be taken into account during the design of overhanging steel beams. One special type of overhanging beams is the crane trolley monorails. Lateral buckling of overhanging monorails under idealized loading and boundary conditions has been studied in the past using classical mathematical procedures. This thesis aims to present a detailed investigation of overhanging monorails using finite element analysis. Effects of different loading and boundary conditions were studied in detail. It was found out that the location of loading and supports on the cross section have significant effects on the buckling capacity. Beams having different warping and torsional properties were analyzed. The effects of cross section distortion on buckling capacity were investigated for beams with single and double overhangs. The reduction in capacity due to cross section distortion has been quantified. Based on the analysis results simple design recommendations were developed for lateral buckling of overhanging monorails and they are presented herein.
