Experimental Study of Local Scour around a Vertical Pier in Cohesive Soils

Abstract :
Estimation of maximum scour depth is an important factor in designing structures that are embedded in rivers. Using a hydraulic model, the mechanism of local scour around bridge piers that are embedded in cohesive soils has been studied. Experiments were performed in a flume of 22m long, 0.77m wide and 0.60 m deep with a pier of 0.1 m in diameter. Also, three types of cohesive soils with different percent clay were used. While changing parameters, such as current velocity, flow depth, initial moisture content, clay percentage, and undrained shear strength in each experiment, the scour depths were measured.The measured data was adjusted by hyperbolic law. Using dimensional analysis, a relationship between the ultimate scour depth and effective parameters was developed. Finally, the ultimate scour depths obtained by experiments were compared with those calculated by empirical equations.

Numerical modeling of fault rupture propagation through two-layered sands

Abstract :
The fault rupture propagation phenomenon, spreading from the base rock through different layers of soil, is a matter of concern in many natural and man-made soil structures. The focus of this paper is to investigate reverse fault rupture propagation through two layers of sand deposits by means of numerical modeling. For this purpose, analyses are carried out for different permutations of the three typical materials: dense sand, medium dense sand and loose sand, considering five fault dip angles, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 degrees. The validity of numerical model was verified by simulating an experimental model of homogeneous soil layer subjected to reverse faulting. Further to the general trends found in fault rupture propagation in a single layer of soil, special attentions are devoted to the refraction of fault path in the interface of two materials as well as its concavity in the continuation. Moreover, four patterns of fault rapture propagation in two-layered sands, depending on their arrangements and fault dip angles, were concluded from the results.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODELS FOR PREDICTION OF GULLY GROWTH AND HEAD ADVANCEMENT(A Case Study: Queen Ede Gully Erosion Site, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria)

Abstract :
This paper examines gully growth and head advancement at Queen Ede gully Site Benin City.This is achieved by observing gully growth and head advancement between the year 2000 and 2012 using field surveys, aerial photographs and geographical information system. Also by using experimental models such as Thompson [1], American Soil Conversation Service, SCS (I), SCS (II) and FAO models, for estimating migrating headcuts over a study period. Results obtained, revealed that the gully width varied from 15.6m to 99.5m while the depth varied from 0.5m to 13.8m. The volume of soil loss was 372, 775m3 over an area of 104.4m2.

A Polynomial Model for Predicting Liquefaction Potential from Cone Penetration Test Data

Abstract :
Liquefaction is a serious geotechnical hazard leading to catastrophic damages which cause life and property losses. In many instances it may be preferable to predict liquefaction susceptibility indirectly, by common in-situ tests such as cone penetration test (CPT). A new approach, for prediction of liquefaction susceptibility, is proposed which presents a polynomial model to correlate cyclic resistance ratio (CRR) predicated on subsoil geotechnical properties from CPT tests, viz. normalized cone tip resistance (qC1) and friction resistance (fs). The derived model is applied to a total of 182 data sets, including field investigation records from eighteen earthquakes. The performance of the proposed approach is compared to other available methods within a quantitative validation framework (e.g., Precision, Recall, andF-Score). Results indicate the accuracy and generalization of the proposed new approach in predicting liquefaction susceptibility.

Evaluation of the Effect of Anisotropic Consolidation and Principle Stress Rotation on Undrained Behavior of Silty Sands

Abstract :
The dependence of undrained behavior of silty sand on initial state of stress and direction of principal stresses with respect to vertical (α) is assessed under generalized loading paths using hollow cylinder apparatus. During applying shear load, value of intermediate principal stress parameter (b) is held constant and α value is increased from zero to the aimed value and held constant. Specimens are consolidated both isotropically and anisotropically to evaluate the effect anisotropic consolidation on the behavior of these soils. Wet tamping method was selected to prepare specimen. Shear loading was carried out under strain-controlled condition to capture post-peak strain-softening response. The results of this study reveal that the principal stress direction and initial anisotropy in stress condition have considerable effects on the behavior of silty sands. By increasing α, susceptibility of silty sand to instability increases. In addition, increase in silt content, silty sand mixtures present higher tendency to flow compared to pure sand. For specimens with high silt content, it is observed that stress-strain response has a sudden reduction in shear strength after a peak. This study reveals that shear strength, steady state friction angle of the silty sands are affected by α and the amount of fines present in the sand.

Method of Fundamental Solution (MFS) coupled with particle swarm optimization (PSO) to determine optimal phreatic line in unconfined seepage problem

Abstract :
In this research, Method of Fundamental Solution (MFS) is coupled with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique to determine the optimal phreatic line in unconfined seepage problems. To model the unconfined boundary (phreatic line), a formulation with floating geometry is derived. Regarding the use of fundamental solution of the Laplace equation, expressed in the Radial Basis Functions (RBF), a boundary type of the mesh-free method can be established. In this research an objective function, based on principle of minimum potential energy, is formed to control the position of unconfined boundary. MFS and PSO are utilized simultaneously to fit the phreatic line using 4thdegree polynomials, satisfying the flow continuity and energy principle. Efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method are verified through examples. The obtained results are in a good agreement with other numerical and experimental models.

DETERMINING SOIL SHEAR STRENGTH PARAMETERS FROM CPT AND CPTu DATA

Abstract :
Determining the soil shear strength parameters, i. e., cohesion (C), internal friction angle (ϕ)is done by means of laboratory tests and the in situ testing data. The cone penetration test, cone penetrometer test (CPT) is not only quick and economical, but also is repeatable and shows continuous records of soil parameters with depth. The common approaches for shearing strength parameters determination from CPT data are on the basis of bearing capacity and cavity expansion theories. In this study, different methods of soil shear strength parameters determination from CPT and CPTu results, qc,fs anduwere reviewed and investigated. A new method is proposed for C, ϕprediction on the basis of all quantities, qc, u and fs from CPTu considering bearing capacity mechanism of failure. One advantage of this method is improvement accuracy in the case of erroneous data by using all three output of CPTu. The proposed, current and experimental test results of an information bank including 32 CPT and CPTu results were assessed in five sites. The comparison of predicted and measured C and ϕangle values indicates good consistency and low scatter for the proposed method. This can be led to more accurate and apply continuous soil parameters in optimized geotechnical design.

Prediction of unsaturated soils effective stress parameter using gene expression programming

Abstract :
Unsaturated soil shear strength can be determined using effective stress relation that depends on the effective stress parameter. Several models have been developed in past few years to estimate this parameter. In this research, the Gene Expression Programming (GEP) is used as an Artificial Intelligence (AI) method for developing a model to predict the effective stress parameter using efficient parameters. The principal advantage of the GEP approach is its ability to generate powerful prediction equations without any prior assumption on the possible form of the functional relationship.The input terminal set consistsof net confining pressure, suction, Soil Water Characteristic Curve (SWCC) fitting parameter, bubbling pressure, residual and saturated volumetric water content. The output terminal set has one member, which is the effective stress parameter. An experimental database obtained from the literature is employed to develop the model. Comparison of the model prediction with the actual data as well as other investigators indicates a very good performance and ability of model. Sensitivity and parametric analyses are conducted to verify the results. It is also shown that soil suction is the most influential parameter in the effective stress parameter of unsaturated soils.

Experimental study on the mechanical properties of clayey soil under different freezing apparatus temperatures and freeze-thaw cycles

Abstract :
The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanical properties of clayey soil with different moisture contents. Two groups of clayey soil with different moisture contents were prepared as samples. One group of samples was subjected to eleven freeze-thaw cycles under a constant freezing apparatus temperature in an enclosed apparatus. The other group was subjected to one freeze-thaw cycle exposed to a decreasing freezing apparatus temperature in an enclosed apparatus. A series of triaxial compression experiments were conducted on both groups of samples. The first experimental results indicated that the mechanical properties of the clayey soil changed after the freeze-thaw cycles under constant freezing apparatus temperature, and cohesion decreased with an increased number of freeze-thaw cycles and increased moisture content. In addition, the internal friction angle increased with the number of freeze-thaw cycles and decreased with increased moisture content.However, the moisture content of the clayey soil had a greater influence on cohesion than the internal friction angle. Additional experimental group results indicated that the internal friction angle of the clayey soil diminished with a decrease in the freezing apparatus temperature and increased moisture content. Finally, cohesion increased with a decrease in either the freezing apparatus temperature or moisture content.

Updated Lagrangian Large Deformation Analysis of Consolidation Settlement with Finite Element Method for a Case Study in Iran

Abstract : Settlement of ne-grained soils is often governed by a consolidation process which involves quite large strains. The classic, one-dimensional consolidation formula is based on the small strain theory, although it is still practically useful. Since strains are relatively large during the consolidation process, the overall behavior of the medium is geometrically nonlinear. In this paper, a coupled consolidation analysis was carried out to predict the consolidation settlement of ground beneath an embankment, as a case study, representing the feasibility of large strain consolidation analysis. A two-dimensional,
updated Lagrangian, large deformation, nite element formulation was employed to simultaneously solve the transient flow and the deformation equations which constitute the coupled consolidation equations. It was followed by the development of a code in the MATLAB environment to solve the required equations, with further application to a case study in Iran. In addition, analyses were performed by one-dimensional conventional methods and compared with the results obtained by the nite element
procedure. Predictions made by large deformation nite element analysis, in comparison to those obtained based on small strain assumptions and conventional methods, appeared
to be more accurate, although the required computational e ort was much higher, owing to frequent recomputation of the sti ness matrix.
