Active Earth Pressure on an Inclined Wall with Horizontal Cohesionless Backfill due to Surcharge Effect

ABSTRACT
A method based on the application of Kötter’s equation is proposed to evaluate active earth pressure on an inclined wall retaining horizontal cohesionless backfill with uniform surcharge. This method considers only the effect of surcharge for the analysis. It is successfully used to evaluate the magnitude and point of application of reaction on the failure surface. The coefficient of active earth pressure and point of application of the active thrust are computed for different combinations of soil and wall properties and the results are presented in dimensionless forms. A fairly good comparison is seen with the available solutions.

The effect of confining stress on the analysis of excavations adjacent to existing buildings

ABSTRACT
In the design of urban excavations controlling soil and adjacent buildings’ displacement are important. The accurate
prediction of displacements is difficult because they are influenced by several parameters. Soil stiffness is an
important parameter in design and it is often assumed as a constant value, but stress distribution in the soil changes
during the excavation and consequently changes the stiffness.
A vast zone of Tehran is composed of coarse-grained cemented sediments and its stiffness is highly influenced by
confining pressure. In this article, a verified FE analysis has been performed to investigate Tehran soil behavior in
excavation. The used soil model is a nonlinear elastic- plastic model in which the effect of confining pressure on
stiffness has been indicated using Janbu model that was calibrated for Tehran soil.
Results show that assuming stiffness as previously mentioned, influences the estimation of wall displacement, ground
settlement and also the type of ground support.

Abstract
Scour around hydraulic structures is an inevitable phenomenon . Recognition of this phenomenon and dealing with it is an issue considering which will ensure the project success . Local scour at piers has been reported as the most important factor in the destruction of the bridges . The use of submerged and non-submerged piles is one of the scour control methods . Submerged piles have been rarely used to assess scour . In the present study, the results of some tests with different flow rates and submergence percentages are given in the bridge abutment . The tests have been conducted at clear water conditions in a flume with length of 14m , width of 60cm and depth of 60cm . The results show that the increase in the submergence percentage of piles has a significant role in reducing pier scour.

Abstract
Iran is an active seismic region. Earthquake damage is commonly controlled by three interacting factors including source and path characteristics, local geological and geotechnical conditions and type of the structures. Obviously, all of this would require analysis and presentation of a large amount of geological, seismological and geotechnical data. In this paper, nonlinear geotechnical seismic hazard analysis considering the local site effects was executed and the soil liquefaction potential analysis has been evaluated for the Nemat Abad earth dam in Hamedan province of Iran because of its important socioeconomic interest and its location. Liquefaction susceptibility mapping is carried out using a decisional flowchart for evaluation of earthquake-induced effects, based on available data such as geological, groundwater depth, seismotectonic, sedimentary features, insitu, field and laboratory geotechnical parameters. A series model tests were conducted and then based on the achieved data the idealized soil profile constructed. A C# GUI computer code “NLGSS_Shahri” was developed and then employed to evaluate the variation of shear modulus and damping ratio with shear strain amplitude to assess their effects on site response. To verify and validate the methodology, the obtained results of the generated code were compared to several known applicable procedures. It showed that computed output of this code has good and suitable agreement with other known applicable procedures.

Simplified Calculation Approach for Settlement of Single Pile and Pile Groups

Abstract: This paper proposes a simple analytical approach for nonlinear analyses of the load-displacement response of single piles and pile
groups. Two models were adopted in the proposed approach. One model is based on a hyperbolic nonlinear relationship to simulate the
behavior between unit skin friction and pile displacement developed along the pile-soil interface. The other model uses a bilinear hardening
model to simulate the load-settlement response developed at the pile base. Based on the two proposed models, a highly effective iterative
computer program was developed for nonlinear analysis of the load-settlement behavior of a single pile. Concerning analysis of the response
of pile groups, the interaction between two piles was assumed to be composed of two aspects: interaction between pile shafts and interaction
between pile bases. Based on this assumption, a reduction coefficient was introduced into the discussion of pile-pile interaction to account for
the reinforcing effect between piles. Comparisons of the load-settlement response for three well-instrumented tests were given to demonstrate

Pile Group Settlement Estimation: Suitability of Nonlinear
Interaction Factors

Abstract: In this paper, predictions of pile settlement determined by appropriate superposition of two-pile interaction factors are compared
with those computed from continuum analysis.Afinite-element package is used in conjunction with the nonlinear Hardening Soil model and the
pile group sizes studied are larger than in previous research. The study is presented in two phases: (1) examination of the modulus variation
within the group allowing the elimination of some variables, and (2) comparison of pile settlement predictions in the context of the significant
variables. The research shows that predictions using the former approach match the continuum analyses very closely for friction piles and reasonably
well for end-bearing piles, and show potential for reducing computational time and effort in such problems. The paper also distinguishes
between alternative definitions of interaction factor and shows that most accurate predictions arise from interaction factors

Abstract. The strength parameters of granular coarse-grained soil are the critical factor that affects
the stability of ultra-high dump. The soil particles of different size have no sorting and random
distribution, which leads to the initial fabric of sample grain uncontrolled in the laboratory test of
coarse-grained soil, therefore, only relying on the laboratory testing is difficult to obtain the reliable
strength parameters of coarse-grained soil. Based on Cellular Automata method, combining the
laboratory triaxial tests of coarse-grained soil developed the HHC-CA model which generated the
coarse-grained soil samples of different initial fabric of grain to characterize the heterogeneous and
random distribution of coarse-grained soil grain group. Then by means of FLAC3D, conducting
triaxial numerical simulation tests of coarse-grained soil and discussing the relationship between the
gravel contents of samples shear band and samples and internal friction angle. Moreover, the shear
strength model for different coarse-grained contents is established. Numerical simulation results
indicated that the relationship between internal friction angle of coarse-grained soil and gravel
contents of samples shear band were increasing function in the same size grading. According to the
increasing of samples gravel contents, the internal friction angle might reduce, but the mean internal
friction angle significantly increased with the increment of samples gravel contents.
