An improved firefly algorithm with harmony search scheme for optimization of water distribution systems

Abstract :
In this study, a new hybrid method based on Firefly Algorithm (FA) and Harmony Search (HS) techniques, is presented for solving the least-cost design problem of water distribution systems (WDS). This algorithm is designed to improve the performance of the FA as a recently developed meta-heuristic that mimics the natural behaviour of fireflies. The use of such a nature–inspired optimization method to solve the optimal design problem of WDS needs particular modifications to produce high quality solutions. Therefore, a modification is proposed to the movement stage of artificial fireflies and based on the HS strategy a memory is utilized to save a number of the best solutions. Another improvement in this algorithm contains the addition of pitch adjustment operation in the FA as a mutation operator.The presented method is applied to optimal design of some well-known benchmark problems taken from literature, and the results confirm its validity. In addition, a sensitivity analysis is performed on the parameters of the algorithm.

Effect of Turbulence Closure Models on the Accuracy of Moving Particle Semi-implicit Method for the Viscous Free Surface Flow

Abstract :
The purpose of this paper is to put forward the effect of different turbulence closer models on an enhanced Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method for solving continuity and momentum equations of viscous fluid. MPS method is a mesh- free Lagrangian method capable of solving non-linear governing equations and simulating complex free surface flow circumstances. Various turbulence closer models are added to a MPS program and applied it to different fluid mechanic problems to investigate the effect of these types of closure. Dam break simulation outcome indicates that two-equation turbulence model improves free surface estimation accuracy most. It also shows that type of utilized Kernel function has no significant efficacy on stability when the effect of turbulence is included. Further, an algorithm called Incomplete Conjugate Cholesky Gradient (ICCG) is applied for computing pressure implicitly. Applying developed model to well-known sample problems cited in the literature represents that using turbulence closure models can enhance the prediction of developed model as well as stability of the simulations.

Multi-period aerobic groundwater bioremediation system design; ACO approach

Abstract :
The optimal groundwater bioremediation design problem is complex, nonlinear, and computationally expensive. In this paper, an improved Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm is employed for optimizing a groundwater bioremediation problem, and the BIOPLUMEII model is used to simulate aquifer hydraulics and the bioremediation process. Injection and extraction pumping rates and well locations are treated as decision variables. Optimization results show that the proposed approach performs better than the Genetic Algorithm (GA), Simulated Annealing (SA) and the hybrid SA-GA algorithm, called Parallel Recombinative Simulated Annealing (PRSA), and reduces the computational time of a number of function evaluations compared with the mentioned algorithms. Applying the optimal dynamic pumping strategy in the second stage reduces bioremediation costs by 13:3%.

Investigating Climate Change Impact on Extreme Rainfall Events (Case Study: Chenar-Rahdar Basin, Fars, Iran)

Abstract :
In this research,the impact of climate change on extreme rainfall events in Chenar-Rahdar Basin, Shiraz, Iran, was investigated utilizing three statistical downscaling methods; namely change factor, LARS-WG, and SDSM. Daily precipitations with different recurrence periods were projected for the future period of 2011-2040 (2020s) based on two AOGCM output data (HadCM3 and CGCM3) under A2 emission scenario.In summary, HadCM3 (for three downscaling methods) projected an increasing trend (of up to 21.8%) in extreme rainfall events for 2011-2040 period with respect to the base period. On the other hand, CGCM3 showed an increasing trend for extreme rainfall events for the first two methods (up to 24.7%), while SDSM method resulted in an increasing trend (up to 3.6%) for recurrence periods of 20- and 25-yr and a very small decreasing trend (down to -2%) for recurrence periods of 50- and 100-yr. Relatively low correlation coefficients in multiple regressions obtained for both AOGCMs reflect limitations of SDSM in downscaling precipitation data in the study area. Comparing three downscaling techniques utilized in this study, it is concluded that using change factor or LARS-WG downscaling methods would be conservative enough in climate change impact assessment for the next 30 years.

Dispersion around a circular cylinder in surface wave motion

Abstract :
In this paper, we examine fluid flow and associated dispersion around a circular cylinder under progressive surface wave motion. The ow eld and vortex shedding patterns were studied using ow visualization and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Several patterns of vortex shedding were identi ed around a single cylinder. The vortex shedding patterns under progressive wave motion are similar to those observed in planar oscillatory flow, except in the way the vortices form and in the orientation they take. The observed vortex patterns in progressive wave motion are more unstable than those in planar oscillatory flow. Using particle tracking and the Lagrangian dispersion method, the dispersion coecients were calculated for various flow regimes. The observations con rm the calculations in general. It was also found that wave steepness can a ect the shedding pattern. The vortices tend to shed more frequently in a wave direction at low wave steepness.

Applicability of a numerical model to predict distribution of suspended sediment concentration in Dithmarschen Bight

Abstract :
The main concern of this investigation is to evaluate the ability of Delft3D-flow package to study distribution of suspended sediment concentration (SSC) over the depth in the Dithmarschen Bight. The area consists of tidal channels and tidal flats with prevailing semi-diurnal tide and is tidally dominated. Required field data was prepared using the data collected by transmissometer and mechanical sampler. Factor of two of measured SSC were used to evaluate the performance of the model. Some dissimilarity was found between the modeled and measured SSC. To verify the reason, two comparing procedures were carried out. First the evolution of the vertical profile of the SSC from the model and the field were prepared and compared. In another procedure the snapshot of distribution of SSC during different phases of a tidal cycle were prepared for both model results and field data. It was found that the predicted SSC values are in good agreement with the field data during the periods of flood phase and low slack water. However, spatial dissimilarities are observed during the periods of high slack water and the ebb phase. An insufficient supply of sediment from the tidal flat predicted by the model was considered to be responsible.

Performance Evaluation of a Facultative Aerated Lagoon for the Purpose of Reviewing the Design Parameters

Abstract :
Evaluating the performance of a facultative aerated lagoon in a semi-humid region in Iran shows that the design parameters, which were derived from foreign references, used for dimensioning these types of wastewater treatment facilities, do not match the real values. A study conducted by Moradhasseli and Mohamadi proves that the design procedure, including choosing the initial design parameters has affected the performance of wastewater treatment plants in Iran [1]. S.R. et al. reported that the need for determining the exact values of qualitative and quantitative parameters for new design is obvious [2]. Of The need to review those parameters to achieve a more realistic and cost effective design is therefore obvious. In addition to suggesting more reasonable design parameters which may be of benefit while dimensioning these plants in Iran, computing the overall BOD removal rate based on the real qualities of the wastewater, which can be used in a theoretical approach for dimensioning, ensures a more accurate design compared with a design based on an assumed detention time as is currently usual in Iran. Accurately designing the facultative aerated lagoons widely used in Iran leads to cost savings because of decreasing the dimensions of the downstream lagoons, thus the obligation to apply the real quality parameters obtained in this study in new designs is proved.

HYDRAULICS OF SLOPE EROSION BY OVERLAND FLOW (A Case Study of Nnobi-Onitsha Hillslope Site, Anambra State S.E. Nigeria.)

Abstract :
The erosion problem at Nnobi was investigated with a view to determining the types and major factors responsible for accelerated erosion in the area in other to develop a simple prediction model for erosion rate. Severe erosion of ground surface such as the unpaved road shoulders and bare soil surfaces in high density areas of South Eastern Nigeria is a common feature. For many years hydrologist and engineers have been beset with challenge of producing adequate drainage works to check the menace of erosion by overland flow. Six flume experiments were conducted where erosion rates were measured. The rainfall data for the past ten years were obtained and analyzed, a survey of the catchment area for each of the gully sites was carried out and soil samples were obtained from the eroding layers of the gullies. Analysis of the results show that the area experiences rainfall of high intensities, with intensities of up to 80mm/hr being recorded for a duration of 30minutes. The slope of the land is generally steep with slope gradient varying from 15% to 22% and the soil particles with very low organic and clay content, ranging between 0.2 to 0.4 to 1 and 6% respectively. A mathematical model of hill slope overland flow for Nnobi experimental watershed was obtained, using Saburo [1] equation to predict erosion rate,

Change point of river stream flow in Turkey

Abstract :
The present study aims to determine the hydrological change-year by evaluating the homogeneity of average annual stream flow data in Turkey. Pertaining to the years 1936-2005, change-year stream flow data from 74 stream flow gauging stations, which have no regulatory structure on the source side, and possessing a minimum of 39 years of data, from stream flow gauging stations located on 26 stream flow basins in Turkey, have been collected. By using the employed homogeneity tests, it has been attempted to detect the change year. Employed methods are the Buishand test, the Pettitt test, the Standard Normal Homogeneity test and the Von Neumann test. By comparing the results obtained from tests, it is aimed to detect the consistency of the change years in gauging stations. The change year could be detected in 16 gauging stations using three tests each every year, and 18 stations using 2 tests in the same year. It has also been ascertained that change years of stream flow are geographically closer to each other in western Turkey in comparison to the east. The reason for values in the west to be closer, with respect to both location and time, might be attributed to the precipitation characteristics and uniformity of measured data.

Lattice Boltzmann Method for Simulating Impulsive Water Waves Generated by Landslides

Abstract :
Impulsive water waves generated by landslides impose severe damages on coastal areas. Very large mass flows in the ocean can generate catastrophic tsunamis. Preventing damages to dams and coastal structures and saving lives of local people against landslide-generated waves have become increasingly important in recent years. Numerical modeling of landslide-generated waves is a challenging subject in CFD. The reason lies in difficulty of determining the interactions between the moving solids and sea water that causes complicated turbulent regimes around the moving mass and at the water surface. Submarine or aerial types of landslide can further complicate the problem. Up to now a number of numerical approaches have been proposed for predicting the behavior of flow during and after the mass movement. In this study a Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) based-code is employed for analyzing and simulating the impulsive water waves generated by landslides. Four experimental cases of submerged and aerial landslides have been modeled to investigate the efficiency and accuracy of the LBM code, and the obtained results are verified against experimental observations. The results indicate the capability of LBM in simulating complicated flow fields and demonstrate its superiority over numerical methods that have been used so far such as SPH and RANS.
