Air pollution is a serious challenge in densely populated cities. It poses a significant threat to human health, property and the environment throughout the developed and developing parts of the world. Real-time air quality monitoring and public access to related information are the key components of a successful environmental management.
Mashups can be customized to adequately address the monitoring of such geospatially oriented challenges. Mashups combine Web 2.0 and Web services technology to facilitate data access and visualization on the Web. The use of mashups provides a cheap and effective platform for displaying real-time data.
The main objective of this paper is to assess, design and develop an environmental monitoring application based on a mashup architecture. The application uses Google Maps API (Application Programming Interface), Web GIServices (Geospatial Information Services), and AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (eXtensible Markup Language)) to disseminate real-time air quality information through the Web. Such information can improve the decisions of the pertinent environmental organizations as well as urban settlers. The application also utilized Web client technologies such as HTML (HyperText Markup Language), CSS (Cascading Style Sheet), and JavaScript for handling the response events and providing flexibility and more interactivity. The developed mashup includes geospatial maps and features, standard business charts, node and link displays, as well as custom visual displays. All visualization components run in any Web browsers and provide a user friendly environment.

Landslides are major natural hazards which not only result in the loss of human life but also cause economic burden on the society. Therefore, it is essential to develop suitable models to evaluate the susceptibility of slope failures and their zonations. This paper scientifically assesses various methods of landslide susceptibility zonation in GIS environment. A comparative study of Weights of Evidence (WOE), Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and Generalized Linear Regression (GLR) procedures for landslide susceptibility zonation is presented. Controlling factors such as lithology, landuse, slope angle, slope aspect, curvature, distance to fault, and distance to drainage were considered as explanatory variables. Data of 151 sample points of observed landslides in Mazandaran Province, Iran, were used to train and test the approaches. Small scale maps (1:1,000,000) were used in this study. The estimated accuracy ranges from 80 to 88 percent. It is then inferred that the application of WOE in rating maps’ categories and ANN to weight effective factors result in the maximum accuracy.

Geographic information systems (GIS) are one of the fastest growing computer-based technologies of past two decades, yet, full potential of this technology in construction has not been realized. Based upon GIS capabilities, construction site layout is one of the areas that GIS could be applied. The layout of temporary facilities (TFs) such as warehouses, fabrication shops, maintenance shops, concrete batch plants, construction equipments, and residence facilities has an important impact on the cost savings and efficiency of construction operations, especially for large projects. The primary objectives of this paper are to describe GIS technology and to present application of GIS technology to construction site layout. The study also delineated the methods of location TFs in construction site. An example application of GIS to location optimization of tower crane and concrete batch plant is provided to demonstrate GIS capabilities as compared with previous models. The spatial and nonspatial data which used in construction site layout process are analyzed and arranged on GIS environment and results showed the GIS can solve site layout problem. Finally, areas of additional research are noted.

The occurrence of cycle slips is a major limiting factor for achievement of sub-decimeter accuracy in positioning with GPS (Global Positioning System). In the past, several authors introduced a method based on different combinations of GPS data together with Kalman filter to solve the problem of the cycle slips. In this paper the same philosophy is used but with discrete wavelet transforms. For experiments we simulated artificial cycle slips in real data. Studies show that the selection of a proper wavelet basis functional basis for wavelet is a very important problem in wavelet transforms. Wavelet transforms accurately detects the place of cycle slips, especially in low noise test quantities.

Fixing integer ambiguities is a non-trivial problem, especially if we aim at computational efficiency and high performance (or success rate). For this reason it has been a rich source of Global Positioning System (GPS) research over the last decade. A brief review of ambiguity resolution using the method of Least-Squares AMBiguity De-correlation Adjustment (LAMBDA) and rapid GPS ambiguity resolution for short and long baseline (KTH method) is presented in this article. It continues with some numerical comparisons between two methods with real (float) and simulated GPS data. Finally, we end the paper with conclusions and some remarks. This comparison shows that the results of ambiguity resolution for short baselines are exactly the same using the KTH, LAMBDA and Trimble Total Control (TM) software. Also, for very long baselines these methods and software were not successful in solving ambiguities. However, the success rate of Trimble Total Control software was lower than for the others. This research also shows the exact effect of ionosphere in ambiguity resolution techniques. Any improvement in this area can improve the quality of ambiguity resolution significantly. More research with extra GPS observations in different conditions must be made for better results in the future.

A developed model was applied to displacement vectors acquired from a project that monitored the vertical movements of a building in the main campus of Nigde University. The estimated subsidence and its corresponding standard deviation errors by the model are -4.89 mm ± 0.53 mm for block 1, -1.23 mm ± 0.35 mm for block 2, and -3.65 mm ± 0.54 mm for block 3, respectively. The tilt angle is estimated and its corresponding standard errors are 16”.61 ± 2”.39, -18”.93 ± 1”.95, and -13”.87 ± 4”.64 arc second for Block 1, Block 2, and Block 3 respectively over a period of one year. Results showed that the model produced in this paper can be used to estimate the vertical movements of a building with a Mat foundation.
